About WICGE

The Women in Coastal Geoscience and Engineering Organization (WICGE) empowers and supports women at all career stages by fostering networking, mentorship, and advocacy for equal opportunities and representation in coastal geoscience and engineering fields. WICGE creates and supports a scientific community in which everyone is included regardless of gender identity.

While gender equity remains a challenge across many disciplines, it is particularly pronounced in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This imbalance is often visible at conferences, where female keynote speakers are scarce, and women are underrepresented on committees and panels. Additionally, there is a lack of women in senior academic and industry roles, further highlighting the disparity.

Hence, our mission is to achieve gender equity in our field by:

  • Conducting research on closing the gender gap in coastal geoscience and engineering.
  • Inspiring and encouraging women in STEM, particularly within coastal geoscience and engineering.
  • Celebrating and publicizing the achievements of women in coastal geoscience and engineering.
  • Fostering a network of women and allies who support one another professionally and encourage each other to stay engaged in the field.
  • Providing formal career development mentoring.

We also recognize the unique challenges faced by members with intersectional marginalized identities and aim to support them through internal affinity groups and mentorship programs.

We believe that diversity is a strength and we value everyone for who they are. By embracing our differences, we create a vibrant and inclusive community where all our members can succeed and feel safe.
