Postdoctoral position on Early Warning System development for storm surges

Under a joint collaboration between the University of Ferrara and the EU Joint Research Centre (https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/) we will be looking for a Post-doctoral Research Assistant who will develop an operational, impact-oriented, storm surge model for Europe. Given that the operational model will be based on systems/models already existing at JRC, their scientists will be strongly involved and part of the work will take place at Ispra in Italy but the research fellow will be permanently based in Ferrara. Given that EFAS/GLOFAS JRC models are using ECMWF protocols most likely the European Centre for Medium Weather Forecasting in Reading (http://www.ecmwf.int) will be also involved to some extent.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in coastal engineering, oceanography or marine sciences in general. A strong programming capability is required, ideally coupled with operational modeling experience. An excellent publication record is a must as well the capability to attend international meetings presenting project results. Because of the nature of the work the appointed person will spend periods outside of the office being detached to JRC. During the periods of detachment an additional mobility allowance will be paid.

Any candidate who may be interested in the position should send an email to the Principal Investigator Prof. Paolo Ciavola (cvp@unife.it) to obtain further details about the project and the job conditions. We may also open few positions for PhD students this summer, students with an interest in coastal modeling and a relevant MSc should consult the joint PhD program between the University of Ferrara and the University of Cadiz. at the address below:

Because of immigration restrictions in Italy for work permits, EU nationals for the post-doctoral position are preferred or candidates with a valid work permit for Italy if from outside the EU.

The initial salary is in the order of about 1400-1500 Euros net per month and the contract will initially be for one year, extendible up to four years according to performance. No knowledge of Italian is needed as the COSTUF group at UNIFE uses English as working language.

Interested candidates should enclose to the mail a statement letter and a CV with a full publication list as well as the address of three referees.

The current selection aims at building a reserve list for the position, only selected candidates will be contacted further after the passing of the deadline.

The deadline for applications is 9 May 2016. The position is available from 1st June 2016 or thereafter.
