Description

Position Title: Modeling Hydrology in Coastal Wetlands Using DELFT3D

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Postdoctoral Scholars
Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) invites applications for a
postdoctoral research position in JPL’s Radar Science and Engineering
Section.

The research will involve hydrology modeling with
DELFT3D. The main objective is to model the flow of water through river
and tidal channels as well as wetlands and compare to remotely sensed
measurements. The main outputs of the model will be: (1) water level
height; (2) water surface velocity; (3) water discharge. Several
iterations of the model will be necessary in order to match the remotely
sensed variables. Dr. Marc Simard, Senior Scientist, in JPL’s Radar
Science and Engineering Section, will serve as JPL postdoctoral advisor
to the selected candidate. The appointee will carry out research in
collaboration with the JPL advisor, resulting in publications in the
open literature.

Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. in
hydrology or similar with a strong background in modeling. In addition,
candidates should have knowledge in modelling (DELFT3D), hydrology in rivers and
coastal oceans as it will be important during the modeling efforts to
include the impact of tides and winds. Experience in remote sensing, GIS
and programming is highly desirable. Candidates who have received their
Ph.D. within the past five years since the date of their application
are eligible. Postdoctoral Scholar positions are awarded for a minimum
of one-year period and may be renewed up to a maximum of three years.
