PhD opportunity on Resonant forcing of harbor oscillations (coastal seiches) by infragravity waves

The Wave and Structure Interaction (IVS) team of SIAME laboratory, Université de Pau et Pays de l’Adour (UPPA), Anglet, France is seeking applicants for a fully-funded PhD project on resonant forcing of harboroscillations (coastal seiches) by infragravity waves.

Project details
The project is funded by the Aquitaine Regional Council on behalf of the port of Bayonne and the Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (Service Hydrographique et Océanographique de la Marine orSHOM). The project aims to study the Bayonne harbor response to infragravity wave energy. The project will involve a detailed study of the harbor oscillations during storms including a field campaign to understand the mechanisms of generation of coastal seiches. It will include a numerical model implementation and calibration. The model will also be applied on other harbours considered as representative of the variety of harbour configurations encountered along the Atlantic coast. Finally, a range of scenario will be run to develop predictors for extreme water level in harbours that can be used to prevent damages and secure loading operations at port facilities.

The project will be supervised by Professor Stéphane Abadie with assistance from Associate Professor Denis Morichon (SIAME, UPPA) and Dr Gaël André (SHOM, Service hydrographique et océanographique de la marine)

Requirements:
Applicants must have a Masters degree with orientation in reseach or equivalent in the field of Coastal Engineering, Oceanography or eventually Fluid Mechanics with proven interest in Earth Sciences. The successful candidate will have evidence that they are proficient in written and spoken English. They will have experience with numerical modelling and have the proven ability to plan and undertake field work.

Location:
The student would join the Wave and Structure Interaction (IVS) team of SIAME laboratory working and living in Anglet in the south west of France.

Application Procedure
To apply, please email Associate Prof Denis Morichon with a full C.V. (with the contact details of at least one academic referee) and accompanying letter of application for 12th June. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted and discussion may begin immediately. Final results will be communicated by July 13th, 2016.

Start date
The successful candidate should be available to start as soon as possible after, 1st September, 2016.
